Prehistory of wooden Euro pallets Euro pallet is a "working horse" of supply chain we've been heavily relied on. For many years it used for distribution, display of goods, storage and general applications. First introduced in 1961 it is still the foundation in suppply chain even with a challenging plastic and metal alternatives along the way. Estimated that 500 million Euro pallets circulating at the moment in this biggest reusable exchange pallet pool. Forklift truck use and WWII increased demand for faster and more efficient material handling. At that time mainly two-way pallets were manufactured but they could be handled by a forklift truck only by entering either from their front or rear. Only in 1940 Norman Kaynes - specialist in US Naval ordnance material handling laboratory came up with idea of four-way stringer pallet. He patented this invention and released pallet trade magazine Palletizer to advertise his product for US army. Similar pallet modernization ideas were boiling in European minds. Two brothers from Sweden, Ivar and Tore Svenssons were manufacturers of wooden boxes but with a first forklift trucks introduced in a country were offered to design a pallet. Their pallet design was adopted as standard by Swedish railway association and after a while by European railways. In 1961 International union of railways UIC (Union Internationale des Chemins de fer) started European pallet pool and enabled pallets produced by licensed manufacturers marked with EUR brand badge could be exchanged so Euro pallet was born. Steadily inscreasing number of participants in 1993 European Pallet Association (EPAL) was formed to supervise and certify pallet manufacturers and suppliers. Euro pallet being 80 cm wide was maneuverable and perfeclty fitted narrow standard 90 cm doors. Starting as a local mean of shipping it became a key supply chain element for cross border trade in Europe and internationally. There are 4 types Euro pallets: EUR/EUR1 800x1200mm (31,5x47,24in) EUR2 800x1000mm (47,24x39.37in) EUR3 1000x1200mm (39,37x47,24in) EUR6 800x600mm (31,50x23,62in)
